Most cinnamon research has used cassia cinnamon, not Ceylon, at daily amounts in the region of one to six grams of ground bark — and pooled analyses of that work report small, inconsistent effects on fasting glucose with no reliable effect on longer-term markers. Cassia and Ceylon are not interchangeable
Walk into any supermarket and the jar labelled simply “cinnamon” is almost certainly cassia — grown mostly in China, Indonesia and Vietnam, cheap, strongly flavoured and thick-barked. Ceylon cinnamon, sometimes sold as “true cinnamon,” comes mainly from Sri Lanka, costs several times more, and has a milder, sweeter profile. They are different species from the same genus, and for supplement purposes the difference is not cosmetic.
The physical tell is easy once you know it. A cassia quill is a single thick curl of hard bark that snaps rather than crumbles. A Ceylon quill is made of many paper-thin layers rolled together, brittle enough to break apart between your fingers. Ground into powder both look similar, which is exactly why the species name belongs on the label rather than being left to guesswork.
This matters commercially too. Because cassia is far cheaper, the overwhelming majority of cinnamon in the supplement supply chain is cassia unless a product explicitly says otherwise. If a label just says “cinnamon bark extract,” the safe assumption is cassia.
The coumarin problem, and why it decides daily use
Cassia cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, a plant compound that has been linked to liver toxicity at sustained high intakes in susceptible people. Ceylon cinnamon contains only trace amounts. This is the single strongest practical argument for choosing Ceylon when cinnamon is something you plan to take every day rather than sprinkle on porridge occasionally.
European food-safety authorities set a tolerable daily intake for coumarin of 0.1 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. Coumarin content varies widely between cassia batches, so the amount of cassia powder needed to reach that limit varies too — but the honest framing is that several grams of cassia powder daily can approach or exceed it for an average adult, which is uncomfortably close to the doses used in some of the research. That tension between “the studied dose” and “the safe daily dose” is rarely acknowledged on a sales page, and it is the most important thing in this article.
Two ways around it exist. Use Ceylon, where coumarin is not a meaningful concern. Or use an aqueous (water-based) cassia extract, since coumarin is fat-soluble and largely left behind during water extraction — which is why several standardised extracts advertise low or undetectable coumarin.
What doses were actually studied
Human trials of ground cassia bark have typically used somewhere between one and six grams per day, usually split across meals and usually run for four to sixteen weeks. Trials of concentrated aqueous extracts have used much smaller amounts, because the point of an extract is to deliver the active fraction without the bulk. Comparing a 500 mg extract to a 3 g whole-bark study is not a like-for-like comparison, and a label that simply says “cinnamon 500 mg” without saying which of those two things it is has told you very little.
What did those trials find? Broadly: small reductions in fasting glucose in some studies, no change in others, and no consistent effect on longer-term glycaemic markers (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health). A Cochrane systematic assessment examining cinnamon in diabetes concluded there was insufficient evidence to support its use (Leach & Kumar, Cochrane 2012). Later meta-analyses have been somewhat more favourable on fasting glucose specifically, while still flagging high heterogeneity between trials — different species, different preparations, different populations, different durations. When the studies disagree that much, the honest verdict is “possible small effect, poorly characterised,” not “proven.”

Whole bark, water extract or oil: why the form changes everything
Ground bark is the whole spice: cinnamaldehyde, polyphenols, fibre, coumarin and everything else, in the ratios the tree made them. A water extract concentrates the water-soluble polyphenol fraction and leaves most fat-soluble compounds — including coumarin and much of the aromatic oil — behind. An essential oil does the reverse, concentrating the volatile fraction into something that is a flavouring agent and a potential irritant rather than a food-equivalent supplement.
Those three products share a name and almost nothing else. A milligram of one is not a milligram of another, and evidence generated on one does not transfer to the others. This is the single most common source of confusion in the category, and it is why a “standardised extract” with a stated ratio and a named marker compound is worth more than a bigger unqualified number.

Four checks cover almost everything. First, species: does it say cassia or Ceylon, or does it hide behind the word “cinnamon”? Second, form: bark powder, aqueous extract, or oil? Third, the milligram amount per serving — and whether that figure sits anywhere near what the relevant trials used for that form. Fourth, whether the actives are listed individually or buried in a proprietary blend, because a blend total tells you nothing about any single ingredient.

What cinnamon cannot do
It cannot treat, prevent or reverse diabetes or any other disease, and no supplement should be presented that way. Blood glucose is a clinical matter; if yours is a concern, that belongs with a doctor and a test result, not with a shopping decision. Cinnamon also does not cause weight loss. It has been studied for post-meal glucose response, which is a different endpoint entirely, and any page that quietly converts one into the other has stopped describing the research.

A sensible way to use cinnamon, if you want to
If the goal is culinary and occasional, the species barely matters. If the goal is a daily supplement, choose Ceylon or a low-coumarin aqueous extract, keep the amount within what the label recommends, take it with food, and give it long enough to judge — the trials that found anything ran for weeks, not days. Track something objective if you can, because subjective impressions of a spice are unusually easy to talk yourself into.
And keep the expectation calibrated. The realistic upside here is a small nudge to one marker, layered on top of the things that actually move metabolic health: sleep, activity, fibre and overall dietary pattern. Cinnamon is a reasonable passenger. It has never been the engine. That verdict holds for most of its shelf-mates too. Chromium and sugar cravings is the closest neighbour in the blood-sugar column, and green tea extract and EGCG is the ingredient most often sold with the same gap between an appealing mechanism and a measured outcome.
